Hi..

Nice to read your blog, but very sad to note that the government cannot catch Sri Ram Sena activists and is letting them spread TERROR in a beatiful state like Karnataka..I'm ashamed at the apathy of the government here...open your eyes and rethink what democracy actually means...

Please do us a favour and THINK how beating up women is equated to Indian Culture...ask them to define it first...

Anadi - what are you talking dude?

Karnataka police arrested pub attackers within 10 minutes of the attack.

Karnataka police arrested "so called attackers" of Kerala MLA daughter within 10 hours. (different matter now that it appears Kerala MLA himself or his supporters were unhappy with his daughter roaming around with boy of other religion and may have planned this "attack")

They are produced to court and after than Judiciary takes over. Executive branch can't interfere with that.

If these attackers are coming out on bail questions should be asked with court and not govt. Karnataka Police are doing great job.

I agree with Lenny Kurian..

We can't expect govt to deploy police and commando forces to provide security to pubs-Pubs should hire enough security guards and bouncers... Looks like the pub in question had none to prevent unauthorized entry of SRS activists...

Why haven't you arrested the Sri Ram Sene Chief so far?.

I say put him under NSA..

Dear Dr. Acharya,
There is a series of attacks on COPS by NAXALITES in the last month ,starting with Gadchiroli in MAHARASTRA on february 3rd 2009,in BIHAR on 9th feb 2009,the series of atatcks in various states clearly shows that NAXALITES will not stop until the LOK SABHA ELECTIONS.....Since they consider DEMOCRACY as their biggest ideological enemy.
But the most serious learning from these attacks is that in all the naxal attacks the cops have done serious procedural lapses. Please go through the link below
http://www.rediff.com/news/2009/feb/10maoist-attack-procedural-lapse-cost-bihar-cops-their-lives.htm
I hope the COMMUNIST MLA,the ENGLISH MEDIA and the INTELLECTAUL supproters are not conspiring to divert the important security issues and threat by the NAXALITES.
The most important aspect is also how do the NAXALITES know in advnce about the procedural lapses by the POLICE FORCE,this happened even in case of ORRISA attack in FEBRUARY last year????Are there naxal sympatisers in POLICE FORCE????\
Regards
Puneeth

I can understand the authorities being taken by surprise the first time round. Will be interesting to note what preventive action if any, is taken by the Home Ministry to ensure the Mutaliks of the world dont have a free run on the 14th of Feb, or any subsequent date.

Yes the women who work and want to drink should carry the bottle to their homes so that they are not sexually exploited and tell their parents and brothers about it.

At pubs they can be used by blackmailers and pimps for their advantage.

The women should not be taken advantage by gullible men in name of their Freedom.

morally deranged people , as you say use women at Pub for their carnal desires.

ITS BAD and SHOULD BE SHUNNED.

all Men having mother and sister will never want his mother to sit in PUB.

If you can make your mother sit in PUB , support it

Mr.Acharya,
I take this opportunity to condemn the attacks that happened at a pub in Mangalore. I strongly feel that as home minister for Karnataka you could have acted much more pro-actively without bothering about hurting feelings of hindutva organizations. I also condemn the way media has made hero out of an idiot called Mr.Mutalik. The Mutalik demon is creation of our media and not by actions of Sri Ram Sene.
All said and done, I do support your idea on news ombudsman and feel that today there is a definite need for news Ombudsman. The print and electronic media today are sensationalizing minor news items and are ignoring bigger issues. It seems they are hell bent on increasing their TRPs at any cost. As you said, 'they publish/broadcast first, and then verify' quite a few news items. In one case in Sep/2007 a news channel 'Live India' broadcast a sting operation on a Delhi school teacher and accused her of running a sex racket. The poor teacher was beaten by the mob and was dismissed from service and then arrested. One week later it was found that the entire story was concocted, sting operation was fake and the teacher was not at fault. The electronic media which created lot of hoopla around the sting operation initially, played dumb and sat quiet with its tail between its legs when it was known that the entire sting operation was fake. Here is the URL where you can access the story - http://ibnlive.in.com/news/tv-channel-stung-by-own-sting-on-sex-racket/48200-3.html
This and many such incidents show that media can not be trusted for all that they publish or broadcast. It shows that the media can stoop down to abysmal levels of irresponsibility to gain TRPs. Based on this, I feel there is a need for an ombudsman that can verify the media stories based on complaints from public. Today we do have ombudsman for banking and insurance in India. I do not feel the banks or the insurance companies ever complained about ombudsman being impediment in conducting their business with freedom. If the media is sure that they are not printing/broadcasting some concocted sting operations/stories, they should never bother about media ombudsman investigating their stories. Media is behaving like Kumbalakaayi Kalla (Ref: Kumbala Kaayi Kalla Andre Hegalu Mutkondu Nodida) by opposing the the very thought of a discussion on necessity of media ombudsman. So, please go ahead and do appoint media ombudsman. Also, please do ensure that you do not politicize this issue and appoint your own fellow party men. Instead, appoint people of good reputation such as Justice Santosh Hegde who are known as impartial and strict.

Kumar dude above said "all Men having mother and sister will never want his mother to sit in PUB." - we are talking about a freakin pub not brothel you idiot! If someone misbehaves - they need to be punished not the gals who want to enjoy a drink with their friends. There is nothing wrong with that- grow up!!

@kumar,

whatever your conservative ideas are, please restrict it to yourself and your family.

Why should it be applicable to your neighbours and society as a whole?

If Pubs are bad, they have to be closed down by the state by enacting a law. Else, both men and women should have a right to go there. That is what is called DEMOCRACY. (just in case you have forgotten)

Its the duty of the state to provide protection to women and not preach morals.
