Opposition frustrated over govt’s success, says Acharya

Udupi: Aug 7, DHNS:

''BJP is a party for unity and religious harmony with value added politics facilitating the socialist form of society inspired by Gandhian idealogies,'' said Home Minister Dr V S Acharya.
Speaking after inaugurating the State Executive Committee meet of BJP Minority Morcha here on Saturday, he said “BJP is not a communal party as labelled by the rival parties. Opposition is frustrated over the government’s success and is finding ways to defame the government.”

Sportsmanship and spirit should be part of democracy which the Congressmen are lacking. “Our government has achieved more than Congress government within a short period of 25 months which they were not able to do in 40 years. We are patient enough to encounter any sort of provoking statements against our administration,” he added.

He said the BJP government has introduced ‘Arivu Yojane’ for the betterment of minority communities. It provides loan at 2 per cent interest rate. Besides, government has introduced ‘Suvarna Arogya Chaithanya Yojane’ under Yashaswini-2 programme to provide free health check for the shool children. A sum of ` 50 crore has been earmarked for the purpose. With respect to law and order in the State, Karnataka is peaceful and harmonious state, Dr Acharya said.

The funds released for Minorities Development Board have been increased to ` 100 crore. The Government has taken measures to improve the educational status of girl children belonging to minority communities.

BJP Minority Morcha State President Dr N F Mosin Nizamuddhin said that as many as 33 representatives from across the State are taking part in the meet.

The Government had released nearly ` 250 crore for various beneficiary programmes for the minorities.

Udupi MLA Raghupathy Bhat, Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon, BJP District President Udaykumar Shetty, BJP Minority Morcha State Coordinators Kennedy Shanthakumar, Abdul Hakeem and others were present.

Towards a Genuine Centre Right Party...

FE Editorial : BJP’s future
The Financial Express/Editorial/19.05.2009
India needs a genuine centre-right party
The BJP must be feeling terribly demoralised, having lost two general elections in a row. The prospect of ten long years out of power at the Centre would daunt even the most optimistic politicians. Yet, there is no need for the BJP to be despondent—that runs the risk of them lurching further to the political right as a reaction. This election has seen the decimation of many smaller parties which had, in many ways, disproportionately influenced Indian politics for the last 13 years. In fact, the Congress gained more at the expense of these Third Front parties than the BJP. The voters are, after a long time, yearning for bipolarity and the BJP, as the second-largest national party, is still the main alternative for voters. That said, the BJP would do well to rethink some parts of its agenda. The party was at its most attractive under the moderate leadership of Atal Behari Vajpayee, who ran what was arguably the first genuinely centre-right government in independent India. There is still space for that agenda—a combination of right-wing economics and conservative, but not extremist, politics.
The BJP would do well to amputate its Hindu right agenda and become a mainstream centre-right party. Any agenda of hate and exclusion (which Varun Gandhi led the BJP into) is unlikely to garner enough votes in what is essentially a secular country. Such an agenda is also unnecessary to be a viable political party and must, therefore, be revised. For this, it may need to jettison some of its older leadership and induct younger, more forward-looking people at the top-rung of the party hierarchy. The BJP has always claimed to have more internal democracy than the Congress—that itself may make it an alternative option for those who dislike the family-run Congress party—and this democracy should be strengthened as the churning begins. Remember also that the Congress is unlikely to follow aggressive pro-industry policies as part of its mandate—the BJP would be in a good position to provide an alternative; it had a much better record on infrastructure when it was in office, compared with the UPA’s last term. And while the BJP rediscovers itself, it must keep in mind that politics is about the long term (and not two general elections). The tide does and will eventually change, but the BJP must be in a position to ride it—it need look no further than the toiling Mamata Banerjee for consolation and inspiration....

''Nationalism, security, prosperity and equality

Mangalore April 20, 2009: The Home Minister of Karnataka Dr. V S Acharya today alleged the Congress Party leaders including its Supremo Sonia Gandhi, were spreading false propaganda against the BJP.
''This was done mainly due to frustration over BJP Government gaining popularity in the State,'' he added. Taking strong exception to Congress terming BJP as communal, Dr Acharya told newsmen here, BJP deserves respect for its commitment to principles and is not indulging in spreading false propaganda.
''Nationalism, security, prosperity and equality are the main principles of the BJP. The people of the State are already aware of the ill-designs of the Congress Party,'' Acharya charged.
Referring to Mr Rahul Gandhi's statement during an election meeting in Bangalore recently on the BJP Government having failed to utilize the grants released by the Centre, Dr Acharya claimed the Congress-led UPA Government had not released any grant other than recommendation made in the XII Finance Commission. The congress fearing the defeat is making thoughtless statements, he alleged. He also alleged that the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi did not know the nationality.
Defending his recent much-publicized visit to the Congress workers meet in Udupi District, Dr Acharya said, the visit was neither to the Congress office nor to the meeting of that party. ''I have been there to meet one of my old friends. I met my friend on his invitation at his shop and there was no party flag or no party meeting was being held there,'' Dr Acharya clarified.
