Police personnel too have Human Rights: Bidari

"Following assertions made by certain Congress leaders detained on Adugodi City Armed Reserve premises, clarifications have been issued to the public,"

*"The Congress didn't obtain licence from the police before its members went on a protest on Saturday morning,"

* 345 persons were detained for violating prohibitory orders and for attempting to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha. They were detained in the drill shed of the City Armed Reserve, Adugodi * Since 1982, this area has always been used as a detention centre. Agitating farmers, labourers, anganwadi workers and political activists have been detained at this place during protests * The area is a drill shed used for police functions. We have provided 300 chairs for persons detained on Saturday * They were given mineral water, tea and coffee. Lunch was arranged from Adiga's restaurant * The office room of DCP, headquarters, was vacated to accommodate detained leaders. Bathrooms at the DCP's office have been provided for all detained men and women * Two senior officers of DCP rank were looking after the well-being of detained persons from 11 am until their release at 5 pm * The detained were allowed to use mobile phones. No search was carried out on them * They were allowed to move freely within the vast area of CAR (south), Adugodi * The assertion that detained persons were kept at a dog shed is false. A signboard displaying `Police Dog Squad' was, incidentally, near the place of detention. Visuals that appeared in the electronic media also corroborate this fact. The height of a dog shed is 4 feet and the height of a conventional shed is minimum 16 feet * Police know that the detained are senior political leaders and activists. They have been treated with courtesy. (TOI)

Self Restraint by the media: need of the hour

An ill timed statement about law and order- falsely attributed to the Governor, Legislative session in progress ...timing is just right for the miscreants to play havoc!
What is needed at present is the self restraint by the media, not to blow these incidents out of proportion.
Condemning the incident, home minister V S Acharya alleged that some anti-social elements were trying to create disharmony. He gave an assurance that churches in the state would be protected. Acharya said he had deputed a team of senior officials to get an on-the-spot assessment of the incident, and instructed the police to speed up the investigation.
Unanswered questions:
1. Why there was no security guard on duty? (the security guard has been away on leave 3 days ago!)
2. Why did the Congress brigade visit the place at 11am, much before the Church authorities lodged the complaint regarding the attack? (whether the Cong brigade was there to verify the job done by the hired miscreants?)
The debate...
1. Is it the job of the police to guard places of worship?
2. To Blame the police for the vices of the society, is similar to blaming the doctor for ill health!

Good Gesture by Congress...ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರಿಂದ ಆಚಾರ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮಾನ...ಶ್ಲಾಘನೀಯ...

Dr V S Acharya was facilitated by Congress party workers led by Shri U T Khader at Thokkottu yesterday. A cordial gesture amongst political rivals...it may be recalled that even Dr Acharya had shown such gesture when he addressed a group of Congress workers at Hiriadka...As usual the media has a different take on the whole episode!

Daijiworld reports: Comedy of Errors— When Congress Activists Garland BJP Minister ! Mangalore, Aug 10: In what can be termed a hilarious case of mistaken identity, Congress party workers ended up felicitating state home minister Dr V S Acharya instead of their leader and union minister for law M Veerappa Moily, on Monday August 10.
The incident took place at Thokkottu Circle near Ullal where Congress activists were waiting with garlands and firecrackers to extend a rousing welcome to Moily who was on his maiden visit to the district after being inducted into the union cabinet.
No sooner did they see the convoy of vehicles, complete with a police escort, revolving red beacon, and blaring siren, than they began bursting the firecrackers. Seeing this, the police escort and the convoy stopped there. One of the waiting Congress leaders approached the convoy and to his shock found Dr Acharya instead of Moily! Without the slightest hint of embarrassment at such a major gaffe, the Congress leader, MLA U T Khader went ahead and felicitated him by draping a shawl and the two shook hands cordially while someone else garlanded the minister.Dr Acharya was also en route the same programme that Moily was to attend. A few minutes after the incident, Moily reached the spot and was accorded a warm welcome. A Congress worker later said that the felicitation to Dr Acharya was definitely a mistake. He added that in the first instance there were no smiles on their faces, but the second one saw more than its share of smiles!

''Nationalism, security, prosperity and equality

Mangalore April 20, 2009: The Home Minister of Karnataka Dr. V S Acharya today alleged the Congress Party leaders including its Supremo Sonia Gandhi, were spreading false propaganda against the BJP.
''This was done mainly due to frustration over BJP Government gaining popularity in the State,'' he added. Taking strong exception to Congress terming BJP as communal, Dr Acharya told newsmen here, BJP deserves respect for its commitment to principles and is not indulging in spreading false propaganda.
''Nationalism, security, prosperity and equality are the main principles of the BJP. The people of the State are already aware of the ill-designs of the Congress Party,'' Acharya charged.
Referring to Mr Rahul Gandhi's statement during an election meeting in Bangalore recently on the BJP Government having failed to utilize the grants released by the Centre, Dr Acharya claimed the Congress-led UPA Government had not released any grant other than recommendation made in the XII Finance Commission. The congress fearing the defeat is making thoughtless statements, he alleged. He also alleged that the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi did not know the nationality.
Defending his recent much-publicized visit to the Congress workers meet in Udupi District, Dr Acharya said, the visit was neither to the Congress office nor to the meeting of that party. ''I have been there to meet one of my old friends. I met my friend on his invitation at his shop and there was no party flag or no party meeting was being held there,'' Dr Acharya clarified.

Dr Acharya addresses Congress meeting!

Sample of the present day hype...and news manufacturing!
A minister visits a group of 30 people belonging to opposition party (it was not a formal party function as it made out to be...in fact, no permission was sought, for it to qualify as a political meeting, and no banners/flags)...some miscreant sends SMS, which becomes the fodder for for the news manufacturers...and now the news has aquired international status thanks to the local feeders (TOI) for the BBC...which terms it as...A minister in the Indian state of Karnataka has made a quick exit after realising he was addressing the wrong election rally!.
(not to be left behind, the usual suspects too join the Acharya bashing!)
The question here is, is it wrong to extend courtesies to your political rivals?
When Congress leaders address their own workers in meetings, there are chaotic scenes, unruly behaviour...However, here is an event wherein Dr VSA walked into an informal gathering of Congress activists, and had an interactive session in a cordial setting!
Here is the news item which appeared in The Hindu.
Udupi: It is election time, and every political leader is more than eager to speak at the earliest opportunity about the achievements of his party if only it can help get some more votes. But rarely does a seasoned leader make the right speech at the wrong place as it happened at Hiriyadka village, 15 km from Udupi.
Home Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader V.S. Acharya faced severe embarrassment when he accidentally landed in a meeting of Congress workers on Sunday morning.
Udupi Taluk Panchayat member Ramesh Kanchan told The Hindu that a meeting of the local Congress committee was being held at the office of the president of the Hiriyadka Congress Committee, Vinod Kumar Rao, at 11 a.m. The meeting was being held to discuss the opening of the election office of the Congress candidate for Udupi-Chikmagalur parliamentary constituency K. Jayaprakash Hegde on April 16.
He said about 30 Congress leaders and workers were participating in the meeting. Suddenly, Dr. Acharya entered the office. Since he was the Home Minister and a senior leader, a chair was offered to him. Soon Dr. Acharya started his speech and elaborated on the achievements of the BJP government, and criticised the Congress-led governments for their “inadequacies.” It was at this point that the Congress leaders there began firing questions at him. They asked him why the BJP government was giving funds to religious maths instead of giving land to the poor. Why did the repair of roads begin when the Lok Sabha elections were about to be announced?, they asked.
“It was then that Dr. Acharya realised that he was at the wrong meeting. He got up and quietly left the place. He had probably come there to condole the death of Sridhar Mallya, senior BJP leader, who passed away a couple of days ago, but accidentally landed in our office. The house of Mr. Mallya is just little ahead of this office,” Mr. Kanchan said.
Mr. Vinod Kumar Rao, later said: “Since this is election time, Dr. Acharya might have wanted to canvass for his party. But he did not know that the local Congress committee meeting was being held at my place. Congress workers did ask him some questions.”
When contacted, Dr. Acharya told The Hindu that he had gone to Hiriyadka to condole the death of Sridhar Mallya. “Then I saw Mr. Vinod Rao. I thought of talking to him. When I went inside his house, I found many people there. I had an interactive session with them as a Minister. We discussed certain current problems. That’s all,” he said.

Bangalore police identify mastermind behind serial bomb blasts
Bangalore, Feb 5 (PTI) Police have identified the mastermind behind the July 25 serial bomb blasts last year in the city and the investigation has reached "final stage," Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya said today."Culprits of the July 25 serial bomb blasts have been identified. The investigation into the case has reached the final stages. Our police officials will soon share the details," Acharya told reporters here without elaborating.Asked whether the terror suspect Sainudeen alias Abdul Sattar, whom the Hyderbad police arrested and handed over to the city police gave clues leading to identification of the gang, he replied in the negative."The gang is not from Hyderabad. But from another state. I can't give more details than this," Acharya said.Meanwhile, highly placed sources said a 12-member terrorist gang had executed the low intensity serial bomb blasts which claimed two lives and left at least six others injured.Acharya said he was not aware about the progress of investigation into the December 2005 terror strike at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in which an Assistant Professor of Delhi was killed and two others injured. Karnataka govt warns Srirama Sene
Bangalore, Feb 5 (PTI) The BJP government in Karnataka today warned the Srirama Sene, which threatened to "marry off" couples found dating during Valentine's Day, saying "if they take law into their hands, law will take its own course".
"They (Sri Rama Sene) are unnecessarily taking law into their hands. If they take law into their hands, law will take its own course," State Home Minister V S Acharya said, hours after Sene founder Pramod Muthalik said his men would oppose Valentine's Day celebrations and marry off couples found dating.Referring to the Sene activists' attack on a pub in Mangalore on January 24, Acharya claimed that preliminary investigations pointed to the involvement of some Congress leaders. The girls whom the Sene activists assaulted have been identified, but they refused to lodge formal complaint or share any details, he said, adding police continued their investigations.Acharya claimed that a Congress leader, who is also a Sene activist, has been found absconding since the event occurred.
