Mine tourism is nothing new in many parts of the world. It is a great way to preserve existing ecology (and mend any earlier damages) while benefiting local economy by way of eco-tourism. Mines Resort City in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a good example of this(Wikipedia link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_MINES) Once the world's largest open cast tin mine covering 1300 acres, MinesCity is now one of Malaysia's most popular tourist attractions after being developed as a destination for International Conferences and as a high end resort. Mine workers and their descendants who wereunemployed due to closure of the mine are employed by numerous business establishments in Mines City. Some of the events hosted byMines City include G-15 Summit, ASEAN Summit, APEC conferences.Dr.V.S.Acharya visited Mines City in 2002 while on a personal trip toMalaysia (background lake was once a tin mine.
