Karnataka leads in education sector

MANGALORE: The state government has identified five key areas for all-round development of Karnataka, home minister V S Acharya said here on Saturday. The areas include the social sector covering education, health, and hygiene, physical infrastructure, agriculture, people oriented schemes, and language, arts, and culture. The concerted focus on these areas is gaining recognition for the state not just from local, but global leaders, he said.

Inaugurating Sharada College managed by Tulunadu Educational Trust, Acharya said education is an important sector that determines the future of the youth. The state government during this year's budget has set aside Rs 10,500 crore for education against allocation of Rs 4,500 crore a few years back. This is enabling the state to bring more schools under its grant-in-aid scheme, and open new ITI's, he said.

Karnataka through its strong base in education is being reckoned as knowledge driven economy and the state is far ahead of national average when it comes to indices governing this sector. "We have qualitative and quantitative education being imparted in the state," he said adding the emphasis is on providing quality education at all times. Participation of private players in education is helping the state retain its edge in this area, he noted. (TOI/TNN) Photo:Daijiworld

Excellence in Civil Engineering: Backbone for infrastructure development

MANGALORE, June 11, 2010: The state government was planning to start four new engineering college exclusively for training Civil engineers in the state. The colleges will be of the standard of Indian Institute of Technology, said Dr. V.S.Acharya home minister of Karnataka. He was Participating in the exhibition of building materials and technologies organised by the State PWD civil engineers Association on the occasion of the district level civil engineers workshop organised by the state Public Work Department on Friday.

Dr. Acharya said it was very unfortunate that students opt to take medical and other branches of engineering despite the civil engineering having a large scope in the modern economy. He said the civil engineering had a great scope as there were new buildings to be built, new roads to be laid, new bridges, dams and reservoirs to be constructed but we hardly get engineers to fill up the jobs. The new colleges will be built on international styling of campuses and will have modern labs, classrooms, new set of guidelines, curriculum and highly trained faculty."We have to understand the situation around us, everything was changing in the field of civil engineering, and there was so much of work at hand which can be accomplished only by getting exclusive colleges for civil engineering Dr. Acharya said.Apart from all that material changes we have to bring about a change in our work culture and bring up our integrity to a higher level. The stress on classroom teaching should be done away with and more of experiential inputs should be the mantra he added. On this occasion Dr. Acharya also inaugurated the exhibition and visited various stalls and evinced keen interest in few of the technologies exhibited on the occasion. Top civil engineers of the district and the PW Department were present. New concrete technology, waterproofing material, new steel and cement and many other building materials were exhibited. Udupi: State, a model in professional education

Bantakal (Udupi District) Jan 23: Home Minister V.S. Acharya has said that Karnataka is a model for the entire country in providing professional education. He was speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony of the Sri Madhwa Vadiraja Institute of Technology and Management here on Friday.

Dr. Acharya said that there was not a single engineering college in the State prior to 1940. Even Sir M. Visvesvaraya had to go to Pune in Maharashtra to pursue engineering. But now there were 161 engineering colleges in the State. Civil engineering was the mother of all engineering courses. The country was on a fast expansion mode and a lot of infrastructure, including buildings and roads were being constructed. This required good civil engineers.

But after Vivesvaraya, the State had not produced an engineer of that calibre. It was necessary to appoint good teachers in engineering colleges, Dr. Acharya said.

Visvesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, who laid the foundation stone, said that Sode Vadiraj Math was the first among the Ashta Maths of Udupi to start schools. Now the math had become the first among the Ashta Maths to start an engineering college, he said.

Report: Daijiworld/ Photos: Janardan Kodavoor & Daijioworld
Karkala, Sep 19: “Mangalore Airport should be named ‘Tulunadu Airport’ by the union government, in order to give national recognition to the land of Tulu”, said Sri Kshetra Dharmastala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade. The seminar was held with the collaboration of the Central Institute of Indian Languages, ministry of HRD, Manasa Gangotri – Mysore University, Karnataka Tulu Academy, Department of Kannada and Culture, and the World Tulu Conference committee.

Tulu litterateur Yerya Laxminarayan Alva, Karnataka Open University vice-chancellor Professor B Vivek Rai, MLA Gopal Bhandary, and Bhuvanendra College principal Dr Padmanabha Gowda were present.

Home Minister V.S. Acharya said that it was necessary to first recognise Tulu as a State language as this would make it easier to get it included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. Dr. Acharya said that Tulu was one of the oldest Dravidian languages. It was a common misconception that Tulu did not have a script, but the fact was that it had a script.
About six decades some scholars used to write in Tulu script. However gradually, the usage of Tulu script had stopped. The UNESCO had made a list of languages which were in the unsafe category and faced a threat of getting extinct. Tulu was among them. This should be taken as a warning and efforts should be made to protect and promote Tulu. “Languages become extinct because of prolonged disuse. We have to protect Tulu,” he said.(The Hindu)
