Acid attackers may face death penalty

To check acid attacks, the Centre has proposed a special Act, with stringent norms including death penalty for the guilty. Home minister V S Acharya on Friday said the following the proposed legislation Suppression of Offences by Acid Attack the state government has dropped the amendment it had planned to ensure stringent action against culprits. Acharya said acid attack cases have reduced this year compared to 2007. "In 2001, there were 15 cases, but this year there has been only one case till date," he said. A budgetary grant of Rs 1 crore has been given to the women and child development department to help victims. JD(S) member Basavaraj Horatti asked whether relief would be given to male victims too. Acharya replied all victims will get government help irrespective of gender.
