Republic Day 2009: 'People should join fight against terrorism'




UDUPI: The general public, especially youth, have an increased role in the fight against terrorism and other anti-national activities, said home
minister V S Acharya, also in charge of the district. Addressing people on the 60th Republic Day celebration at Ajjarkad Maidan here, Aharya unfurled the National Flag and inspected the parade. Udupi DC P Hemalatha and SP Praveen Madhukar Pawar accompanied the minister. “Supporting and complementing governmental measures to combat terror, people should also work towards guarding the country by mounting surveillance against any forces that try to destabilize the nation,” he said. Acharya said the Udupi DC complex which is being built at a cost of Rs 23.90 crore would be completed by December 2009. Road widening work from Malpe to Manipal is being taken up by the state government at Rs 50 crore. “A task force has also been formed to finalize an air strip, which would help comprehensive industrial development of the district,” the minister said. Koti-Chennaiah Theme Park at Karkala, a large stadium and structure for Kambla (buffalo race) at Miyar being built at the cost of Rs 84 lakh will add up towards "building a conducive atmosphere to turn Udupi district as a tourism destination", he said. "For the 2009-10 financial year, Udupi Zilla Panchayat has sanctioned Rs 5,261.55 lakh for the overall development fo the region and over 66% of the project, construction and development work are in progress. Police constabulary, ex-servicemen, fire force personnel, NCC cadets, Scouts and Guides and schoolchildren participated in the colourful parade, followed by cultural programmes and award presentation.
