Mine tourism is nothing new in many parts of the world. It is a great way to preserve existing ecology (and mend any earlier damages) while benefiting local economy by way of eco-tourism. Mines Resort City in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is a good example of this(Wikipedia link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_MINES) Once the world's largest open cast tin mine covering 1300 acres, MinesCity is now one of Malaysia's most popular tourist attractions after being developed as a destination for International Conferences and as a high end resort. Mine workers and their descendants who wereunemployed due to closure of the mine are employed by numerous business establishments in Mines City. Some of the events hosted byMines City include G-15 Summit, ASEAN Summit, APEC conferences.Dr.V.S.Acharya visited Mines City in 2002 while on a personal trip toMalaysia (background lake was once a tin mine. Building in the background is Palace of Golden Horses - part of Mines City)

I request Hon'ble Minister to investigate link between lobbies which are hell bent on shutting down Kudremukh completely and the rise of Naxalism in the area.
Environmentalism is just a smokescreen for this lobby. If they are so worried about environment why are they silent on destruction in Bellary due to mining?
Also isn't it a coincidence that one of the most mineral rich mining in all Asia in Kudremukh was shutdown and at the same time mining peaked in other areas of state?
I have been to Kudremukh many times and it was one of the best township I have seen in whole India. It will be a national waste if all that infrastructure goes back into wilderness.
Setting up police training academy using existing infrastructure is an excellent move by you sir. And as seen in the Udayavani articles there are elements which don't like law enforcement in their midst! I wonder why???

As a Mining Engineering student in KREC Suratkal (now NIT) we were fortunate to visit Kudremukh plant when it was in its full glory.
Anyone who has been to Kudremukh knows it was one of the efficient and eco-friendly plant. For example unlike the mining truck tragedy we see now on the roads, Kudremukh transported iron ore to Mangalore port through pipes.
And I agree with the minister of retaining at least the township. It was built to last hundred years and it is ideally suited for training academy or eco-tourism.
Instead of mothballing the plant it should retained so that scores of mining/metallurgy engineering students can benefit from it just like thousands of us did -- Pratap
Hayavadana, Thugalukh and so on...author of the article and Editor of Udayavani must be thinking that a poorly worded article like this will become a "master piece" if they throw some words in random. Article reminds me of one of those jobless "Jnanapeethis" who was also involved in protests against Kudremukh. It is well known that he is lobbying for Nobel now for his "service to humanity".
Why are ecoterrorists of Western Ghats so against any suggestion about Kudremukh?
Dear Sir - there is a misconception that Supreme Court ruled againsts ANY activitiy in Kudremukh National Park Area which is not true.
So called environmentalists have consistently misled people about the court order. It bans only MINING in the area. So I really like your idea of using the existing facilities for productive use.
In ex-USSR countries some very large mines and plants which are no longer in use have become attractive tourist destinations now.
More power to you for thinking of the bigger picture unlike the "frog in the well" mentality of self-styled environmentalists!!!
Kudremukh township has potential to be another Mussoorie where IAS officers are trained in Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration.
It can also be used in the lines of National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla (near Pune)
I have been to both these places and environment has actually benefited from these institutions. I laud the efforts of Karnataka Govt in this direction. Great idea.
Dear Sir, Offlate the general perception of the public regarding the police force is that it is a dept with scant regards towards the public and filled with corrupt bibe hungry officers. This general perception does not bode well with any department. This might the result of decades long mismanagement of the force by respective govt. A good professional law enforcement agency will automatically earn respect from the public and that image is also very important for projecting effective detterence towards criminal elements in the society.
A complete makeover of the force would be a good beginning and so as the public face of the force. The website of the agency http://www.karnatakastatepolice.org is typical of a govt web site. I think it is high time to give it some professional makeover and make it atpar with some of the world's topmost police dept like the Newyork police or scotland yard or LA police dept. Just look at their websites at http://www.lapdonline.org/, http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/home/home.shtml etc.
Secondly, every single police officer should adhere to strict force rules as they are the one who deal with the public on a daily basis. A fat lazy looking officer will definitely do no good to the image of the force.
Also, the govt should embark on a media campaign to improve the over all image of the force.
I believe, some 5 star hotel lobby based in north india is hell bent on devaluing the kudremukh property...so that they can buy it for throw away price...
they did similar thing in uttaranchal...and got rid of mining, built spas which only a western tourist can afford! They must have sponsored this article in Udayavani!
Dear Dr Acharya
This is on fire stations. Bangalore has population of more than 75 lacs and there are only 13 fire stations. I think there is a need to have atleast one small fire station to each constituency-- this is so because of reaching the spot in traffic
One is needed in JP nagar of Jayanagar Constituency.I have spoken to Mr Vijaya Kumar local MLA. There is already a place with water facility
