Acharya defends move to appoint 'media ombudsman'- the proposal mooted by the Public of Mangalore!

Home minister V S Acharya on Monday stated that the crime detection rate in Karnataka is going up, so is the conviction rate.Reacting to Union minister Renuka Chowdhury's comment that the crime rate in Karnataka is beyond control, he said: "We have a high detection rate and have solved the serial blasts case in the city, prevented the Hubli blasts and other crimes. So I don't want to react." Speaking about the Kerala MLA daughter's kidnap, Acharya said four out of five persons arrested are from Kerala, one is from Karnataka and all of them belong to the labour organization, CITU.

A Page3 Culture newspaper has been carrying out a slander campaign against the sentiments of Mangaloreans...Quotes statements made by criminal minded people and attributes it to those in power...

The statement taken out of Manjeswar MLA Kunjanbus mouth, has created furore...such words were never uttered by the Home Minister of Karnataka...
But the Page3 newspapers blow this out of proportion, without even verifying with the HM of Karnataka...obviously sponsored by some anti social elements! (original version of the statement: Acharya, also here to attend the party's national executive and national council meetings, said he is studying the unfolding situation. "Kunjambu rang me on Friday night and said his daughter was safe and had reached home," Acharya added.)

Bangalore: IN THE light of media reporting on moral vigilantism by the right-wing groups in Mangalore, the state BJP Government proposes to appoint a media ombudsman to screen reports lacking in objectivity.
Home Minister V S Acharya, echoing the views of a sizable section in Mangalore who say media coverage of the January 24 assault on women at a pub has caused great damage to the reputation of Mangalore, at a peace meeting in Mangalore on Sunday said his Government would consider a policy to keep media “within a Lakshman Rekha”.
“An ombudsman will screen media reports for objectivity and entertain complaints of the public. The media must not go overboard in projecting incidents,” Acharya said.
District-in-charge Minister Krishna Palemar said, “Mangalore has been projected in a poor light across the world by the media.”

Dr. Acharya said the step has become imminent following various disruptive groups trying to destabilize the law and order in the state. Mangalore which has shown a high degree of law and order degeneration was fit to have a police commissionerate, this will help the police to tighten few more loose ends in maintenance of law and order. Outlining the necessity of the media ombudsman in Mangalore Dr. Acharya said "the government was not targeting the media but the government needs to feel the pulse of the people/media and the valid points they make from time to time. The media ombudsman will be located in Mangalore and a senior person will chair this seat he added."
He said the recent events in Mangalore were "unfortunate" and urged the people "Nobody should suspect the BJP government to have any relationship with the vigilante groups, when it comes to the maintenance of law and order we spare nobody."
Dr. Acharya said the "in the recent attack on the pub the media was trying to foist some free comments on individuals, political parties and the system without ascertaining their facts. The Ombudsman will be an officer of the government no less than the rank of a retired judge of the High court with proper office, support staff and infrastructure to carry out collection, documentation and analyse the media reports independently, objectively and have unbiased opinions."
When asked by the presspersons if the ombudsman will in any way interrupt in the functioning of the media and press, Dr. Acharya only said “we are aiming at only analyzing things, nobody in India and in the democratic set up can touch the media” The officer will only assist the government in feeling the pulse of the media
