Monsoon havoc loss pegged at Rs 11 crore

UDUPI: Udupi district minister V S Acharya said that the monsoon havoc had resulted in losses to the tune of Rs 11 crore in the district.

Udupi DC P Hemalatha has been entrusted with preparing a comprehensive report of the damage incurred. The minister said he will meet revenue minister G Karunkara Reddy and seek Rs five crore, as first installment or interim help to contain the damages.

The worst affected areas by sea erosion were Udyavara Padukere, Thenka and Bada Yermal, Hooda villages which cover a total stretch of 1,870 meters.

Acharya who attended the tri-monthly KDP meet also discussed the development of the already existing underground drainage (UGD) systems in Udupi CMC and Karkala TMC and starting up of new UGDs in Manipal, Kalianpur in Udupi CMC and Kundapura TMCs.

Acharya said that the third stage of Malpe Fisheries Port work would be taken up at the cost of Rs 32.15 crore and a final report in this regard has been sent to the Centre. TOI/ Janardan Kodavoor
