Bantwal, Mar 15: “Everyone should co-operate in the state effort of maintaining law and order”, said state home minister Dr V S Acharya. He was speaking at the Salafi Sammelan, held at Nandavar, near here, on Sunday March 14.

“The state can surge in development activities when peace reigns. There is no distinction of minorities and majority in democratic governance. India was the abode of diverse cultures and religions since ancient times. All religions in the world propagate brotherhood and co-existence”, said Dr Acharya. He commended the efforts of Salafi Movement that emphasizes peace, harmony and education of women. Dr Acharya also released the book ‘Mokshada Marga’ and launched the www.salafimovement.com on the same occasion.

SKSM central committee president Ahmed Ansar inaugurated the programme. Sammelan welcome committee president Basheer Ahmed presided over the programme.Ummer Sharief, Ahmed S M, and Akmal Jawhar, also spoke on the occasion.

MLA Yogish Bhat, Sushma Janardhan, G Anand, Chandrahas Ucchil, Mangalore City Corporation chief whip Ranganath Kini, welcome committee chief convener Sarafuddin, community leaders Nazeer Ahmed, Abubaker K, G Abdul Razak Goltamajal, U N Abdul Razak, Mohammed Iliyas, Riyaz Ahmed, and Mohammed Gulam were present on the dais.

Udupi: Cow Slaughter Ban – No Confrontation, but Constitutional Obligation

Udupi, Mar 14: State home minister, Dr V S Acharya, said that the state government has been planning to enact anti cow slaughter ban as per the constitutional obligation, and not to appease or anger any groups. He was speaking after inaugurating the newly formed Udupi District Meat Sellers Association here on Saturday March 13.

The state government, which withdrew the ammendment bill it had introduced in the assembly to the existing Anti Cow Slaughter Act, had later introduced the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill in its place. Acharya said that as per the wishes of Dr Ambedkar, slaughter of cows and other bovine animals has been banned in the constitution.

“To honour the wishes of the majority of people, and as per the election manifesto to which the BJP had committed itself before the last election, and taking into consideration certain legal points which were upheld by the High Courts and the Supreme Court in such cases in North India in the past, this bill has been introduced,” he explained. He insisted that the main aim of the government is to ensure that law and order prevails in the state. “We neither want to appease certain sections, nor antagonize others,” he asserted.

He promised that the government will, within the available legal parameters, extend all possible help to the newly set up meat sellers association. “If necessary, the municipality will hold talks with the Association,” he added. In his address, MP D V Sadanand Gowda said that the non-vegetarians always wish that good quality meat is available. He asked the government to provide basic facilities to the meat sellers and to remove legal hurdles faced by lacs of people who eke out a living through animal husbandry.

Bangalore IT Biz 2009

Bangalore, Nov 11 (IANS): Global meltdown and the flash floods in north Karnataka have forced the organisers of BangaloreIT.Biz 2009, a premier IT event, to shift the venue to a hotel from the sprawling Bangalore Palace grounds and shorten it by two days.
"As a sympathetic gesture to the flood-hit people in the state, we have decided to keep the BangaloreIT.Biz 2009 low-profile," said Karnataka IT and biotechnology minister K. Subramanya Naidu Wednesday at the event's inaugural function.
"We are also aware of the difficulty the IT industry has been facing due to the impact of global recession on outsourcing," he said at the 12th edition of the event, which will now be held over three days.
State Home Minister V.S. Acharya substituted for Kamat and Naidu inaugurated the exhibition on behalf of Yeddyurappa.
Azim Premji of global software major Wipro and Cisco chief technology officer Padma Warrier were present at the opening ceremony .
The event's partner country, Chile is represented by its economic ministry head Mario Castillo, who is leading a delegation of that country's investment promotion board.
About 800 delegates, 100 exhibitors and 90 speakers from diverse industry verticals are participating in the three-day event, which has "ICT for a billion people" as its focal theme.
"Though the event has been kept simple in light of austere measures adopted by the state government for rehabilitating the flood-hit people, we have not diluted the importance of the IT industry," said state IT Secretary Ashok Kumar Manoli.
Besides Indian IT bellwethers Infosys, Wipro and TCS and multinationals such as IBM, Intel, Dell and Cisco, the governments of Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Assam and Tamil Nadu are also participating in the trade show.
"About 10 start-ups will showcase technologies and business ideas to venture capitalists and industries," Manoli said. Read more...

New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS): The Karnataka college that disallows its students from wearing either burqas or headscarves has found unexpected support amongst a section of Islamic scholars who say rules should be followed because Islam is not particular about imposing any dress code.
"Burqa is not a part of Islam. It is a part of culture, the culture that the people of the subcontinent have been following since ages. Nobody can enforce a dress code in the name of Islam. It is categorically un-Islamic," renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Wahiduddin Khan told IANS. "If a college has a rule to not wear a burqa or headscarf then that should be followed and respected. If you don't agree, you quit the college," Khan, who has authored 10 books, said.
His comments came a day after Mangalore's Sri Venkataramana Swamy College disallowed 19-year-old Ayesha Ashmin to attend classes for 12 days because she insisted on wearing a headscarf. The B.Com first year student alleged she was being persecuted for her religious beliefs as she was wearing a headscarf. The college has denied the allegation and said the girl had violated the rules of the institution. Khan, 82, does not disagree with the college.
"Islamic dress is your inner character, not what you wear outside."
"Man or woman, anyone can wear anything they feel is decent. What matters is your truthfulness and honesty in character," said the author of "Discovering Islam From Its Original Sources" that draws a distinction between Islam as presented by Prophet Muhammad and modern day Islam. Fareeda Khan, who is also an Islamic scholar and teaches in the capital's Jamia Millia University, echoed the views.
"The burqa has become the symbol of rigidity and has nothing to do with Islam. You should accept that the burqa, a part of subcontinental culture, has been misused for suicide bombings. Why not avoid the burqa? Burqa is not part of any Islamic dress code," she said.
"I also suggest to my students to not wear a burqa in the university. What is the big deal about it?" Fareeda, who is also the daughter of Wahiduddin Khan, said.

Foundation stone for Gundia Hydro Power Project
Speaking on the occasion Mr. Yeddyurappa stated that the project will be built at a cost of Rs. 1119 crores and in the first phase Rs. 959 crores will be spent. It will produce a total of 400 MW using hydro power. He said the water augmented by a series of check dams across the tributaries of Gundia river at Yettina Holay, Kere Holay and Hongadi Halla and through a channel it will be sent to the underground generating station. Belgaum, Jan 24: Both houses of the legislature on Friday January 23 adopted unanimous resolutions, asserting that Belgaum is an integral part of Karnataka and that the state is not prepared to sacrifice any of its lands to the neighbouring states.
The members of the legislative assembly and legislative council forgot their party affiliations in declaring in unison once again, that Mahajan Commission report is the only report binding on the state as far as border disputes are concerned. By implementing this report in toto, the union government should bring an end to all border disputes, they urged.
Resolutions on these lines were moved by Dr V S Acharya, leader of the house and home minister, in the legislative council while chief minister B S Yeddyurappa moved it in the assembly. The members rose to their feet and thumped their desks to extend their total support to the resolution. Both the houses had adopted similar resolutions twice in the past. On the third occasion, they passed the resolution without any semblance of opposition in the city on which Maharashtra state has been staking claim time and again.
The state, by passing this resolution, asked the union government to bring out a notification declaring the Mahajan Commission report as final and binding on all the concerned states. The political leaders served the cause of the state by forgetting their animosities and coming together to support the resolution.

ಹರಿದಾಸಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠರಾದ ಕನಕದಾಸರದು ಮೇರು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ. ಆದರೆ, ಅವರ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ವಿಚಾರಗಳು ಲಭ್ಯವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಹಿನ್ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆರಂಭಿಸಲಾಗುವ ಕನಕದಾಸ ಅಧ್ಯಯನಸಂಶೋಧನ ಕೇಂದ್ರದ ಮೂಲಕ ಕನಕದಾಸರ ಸಮಗ್ರ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ನಡೆಸಲಾಗುವುದು. ಜನಪದೀಯ ಶೈಲಿಯಲಲ್ಲಿ ಕನಕದಾಸರ ಜಯಂತಿಯನ್ನು ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಆಚರಿಸಲಾಗುವುದು ಎಂದ ಸಚಿವ ಆಚಾರ್‍ಯ, ಕನಕದಾಸ ವಿರಚಿತ ಕೀರ್ತನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜನಮಾನಸಕ್ಕೆ ತಲುಪಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್‍ಯವನ್ನೂ ಸರಕಾರ ಮಾಡಲಿದೆ ಎಂದರು.
ಕೃಷ್ಣನ ಹೊರತಾಗಿ ಕನಕನಿಲ್ಲ: ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ ವಹಿಸಿ ಆಶೀರ್ವಚನ ನೀಡಿದ ಪರ್ಯಾಯ ಪುತ್ತಿಗೆ ಶ್ರೀ ಸುಗುಣೇಂದ್ರತೀರ್ಥ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು, ಕನಕದಾಸರದು ಅಪೂರ್ವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ. ದಾಸ್ಯತ್ವಕ್ಕೆ ಕನಕದಾಸರು ಉತ್ತಮ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ. ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನು ಒಲಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಅಹಂಕಾರ ತ್ಯಜಿಸಿ ದಾಸ್ಯತ್ವವನ್ನು ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಬೇಕೆಂದು ಸಾರಿದ ಕನಕದಾಸರು ತನ್ನನ್ನು ತಾನೇ ದಾಸಾನಿದಾಸ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಕೃಷ್ಣನನ್ನು ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿ ಕನಕದಾಸರಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಪೂಜೆ ಕನಕದಾಸರಿಗೆ ಸಮರ್ಪಣೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಕನಕ ಪೂಜೆ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಪೂಜೆಯ ಭಾಗ ಎಂದೇ ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಉಡುಪಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನಕದಾಸರಿಗೆ ಈ ಹಿಂದಿನಿಂದಲೂ ಗೌರವ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಕನಕದಾಸರು ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಗಂಜಿ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಕುರುಹಾಗಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಕೃಷ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಚಿಪ್ಪು (ಗೆರಟೆ)ನಲ್ಲಿ ಗಂಜಿ ಸಮರ್ಪಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂದರು. ಭೀಮನಕಟ್ಟೆ ಶ್ರೀ ರಘೂತ್ತಮತೀರ್ಥ ಶ್ರೀಪಾದರು ಸಾನ್ನಿಧ್ಯ ವಹಿಸಿದ್ದರು.

Udupi, Nov 15: The Kanakadasa birth anniversary celebrations were held at the Rajangana of the Krishna Math here on Saturday November 15, under the aegis of the district administration, Parayaya Puttige Math and Kanakadasa Studies and Research Centre.
The function was inaugurated by the district-in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya. In his inaugural address, he called upon the scholars of the folk and Haridasa literatures to come together and conduct deep study about the life and preachings of Kanakadasa. He also assured, that the state government is prepared to santion additional grants if necessary, towards the said work, if the amount of a crore of rupees already earmarked for the purpose, is found to be inadequate. He opined, that learning about and emulating the principles for which the great personalities stood, results in the overall welfare of the present generation. He also advised the concerned, to not only study about Kanakadasa but also spread his principles, literature and preaching all over the state. Puttige Math swamiji Sugunendrateerta delivered benedictory speech. Swamiji Raghumanyateerta of Bheemanakatte Math was present.
The programme was presided by local MLA Raghupati Bhat. District deputy commissioner Hemalata, taluk panchayat president Geetha J Prabhu, town municipal president Dinkar Shetty, Udupi Urban Development Authority chairman Sudhakar Shetty, zilla panchayat chief executive officer Prasanna Kumar, Kaup Kurubara Sangh president Sadanand etc., were present.
On this occasion, 'Kanakopanishat,' a work on Kanakadasa written by Bananje Govindacharya, was released by Dr V S Acharya.
Mangalore University Kannada reader Dr B Shivaram Shetty delivered a special lecture on Kanakadasa.
Earlier, in tune with the impetus laid by Kanakadasa on devotion, Bhajan teams came in a procession through the car street here, chanting Bhajans.
Various competitions were held for the students on the occasion.
Local regional transport officer M P Omkareshwari welcomed the guests and the gathering. Director of Kanakadasa Studies and Research Centre H Krishna Bhat delivered introductory address. Suma and Gopalacharya presented the programme.

Karnataka Govt to Develop Five more IT Parks - Mangalore on the Ranks

BANGALORE, Oct 21: The State government has decided to develop five more Information Technology Parks (ITPs) at Bangalore, Mysore, Shimoga, Hubli-Dharwad and Mysore under the public private partnership (PPP) model. The state-owned Karnataka Electronics Development Corporation (KEONICS) would be the nodal agency and land would be provided by the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) for establishing the projects that would be launched before December 15. Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa would lay the foundation stone for work on the Shimoga ITP on November 1. It would come up in an area spread over 25 acres.
Similarly work on the four other ITPs would be launched during November and December. Each ITP outside Bangalore is estimated to cost between Rs 20 crore to Rs 25 crore, IT and BT minister Kattasubramanya Naidu said. Hubli and Mangalore already have an ITP and new ones had been planned to meet the future demands, he added. The Bangalore IT park would come up near the Devanahalli International Airport on a 27-acre plot to be developed by Jain Heights, a private company.
It would be developed on walk-to-work model, where small and medium IT enterprises could start functioning right away after the completion of the project within 20 months. IT & BT Authority soon The state government will soon set up an exclusive IT & BT Authority to function as a facilitator for the speedy implementation of investment proposals in information technology and bio-technology sectors.
A draft bill for the purpose is being prepared and it would be introduced during the next legislature session. The exclusive authority is being created in the light of complaints against the functioning of the present single window system in the industries department, Naidu said. Chief minister Yeddyurappa has taken personal interest in reducing the time-gap between approval and implementation of the projects. The proposed authority would cater exclusively to facilitate investments in IT and BT sectors.
Action was also being taken to simplify the land conversion processes, issuing of clearances from the revenue department and Pollution Control Board and sanctioning of water and power connections under the single window system, he said.

Opposition leaders, taking advantage of the situation...

In an exclusive interview with FLORINE ROCHE of  Daijiworld.com  Dr Acharya tries to assuage the fears of the Christian Community and speaks about other related issues.

Q. Ever since you assumed office as Home Minister you have been facing many challenges….

A. It is most unfortunate that what happened last Sunday is not only least expected but also shocking.  The root cause is the illegal conversion and publication of material by New Life, which was obnoxious and hurtful to Hindu sentiments.  Instead of protesting against New Life, the mob has attacked the Christian places of worship.  It was wrong on their part to do so. 

Q. Are you saying that attack on the Monastery at Falnir was a mistaken identity to and justify the attack?

A. It was indeed a mistaken identity and mistaken action too and I am not justifying their actions.  The attackers should not have gone to attack the places of worship.  They should have given a complaint to appropriate authorities on these illegal conversions and hateful literature.

Q. But your government failed to respond in time which actually made Christians view your intentions with suspicion? 

A. I do agree whatever happened on Sunday and the next day was equally bad.  We were actually rushing to prevent any further damage.  But the irate mob had started attacking the policemen resulting in law and order problem.  Though I wanted to rush on Sunday itself, I could not come in the helicopter due to bad weather.  But soon after coming here we ensured that things have greatly improved.  People were convinced that the government was serious in punishing those who took law in their own hands. 

Q. It is for the first time the peace loving Christians have taken to streets to protest against last Sunday’s incident?

A. It was natural for them to be enraged because of the desecration of the statue and attacks on places of worship when Sunday prayers were going on.  But instead of going on a rampage they also should have exercised some restraint.  Reaction to the action was also extreme. 

Q. There has been a deluge of political leaders who are visiting Mangalore after the attack on places of worship and the subsequent violence?

A. Some people have taken advantage of this situation to bring some political pressure. 

Q. How is the situation as on today?  There are accusations that your government was lackadaisical in tackling the situation in Mangalore?

A. It is wrong to say that government has not done anything.  On the contrary despite it being an emotive issue, we have succeeded in bringing the situation under control.  In today’s meetings with the Bishop, priests and Christian leaders both in Mangalore and Udupi, some priests have acknowledged this fact and I am satisfied to some extent.

Q. What is the outcome of today’s meeting?

R. Catholics have promised us that they will ensure that a similar situation will not occur again.  Our assurance to them has been that everybody will be dealt with equanimity.  We will make sure   that whoever takes law in their hands, will be punished and Chief Minister has instructed the authorities to take suitable action against such elements. 

Q. Christians harbor a grouse that your government failed to condemn the attacks on the places of worship ….. 

A. We have categorically said from the very beginning and the Chief Minster has openly condemned these attacks without any reservations.  At the same time the government has to see the root cause of the problem also.  I agree initially we did not react because we wanted to come here and assess the situation personally. We are extremely sorry we could not come in time to avert the unfortunate incident of Monday. 

Q. Does this not reflect the failure of the intelligence since the attack last Sunday was carried out simultaneously and required pre-plan?

A. An accident cannot be predicted and similarly such meetings are done clandestinely and cannot be equated as intelligence failure. 

Q. The opposition is demanding a probe by sitting high court judge but your government has ruled it out. Why?

A. Judicial probe is ruled out because fortunately there has been no casualty or loss of life.  The whole fracas was due to some people taking law in their hands and there has been over reaction which vitiated the problem further.  The Cabinet will meet tomorrow to take stock of the situation.  A Principal Secretary of the government will look into the problem and we will get assistance from other stream of the police i. e the Higher ups to probe the matter.

Q. What is your assurance to the people of this region who are pained and disappointed by repeated communal disturbances in this district?

A. We will not spare any one who violates law.  For so many years in Mangalore people of all communities have been living peacefully and we want nothing but peace.

Q. Is it a co-incidence that the attack occurred on the last day of the BJP’s National  convention being held in Bangalore …

A. I think we cannot deduce anything else from it other than terming it as a co-incidence. But now I am happy that the matter is resolved within 2-3 days.  I am sorry that such an incident has happened during our government, which was nonetheless shocking for us.  I condemn it whole-heartedly.

So the pattern of any violence in Mangalore follows a pattern: some issue- blown out of proportion by interested elements- outrage in some community- logic takes a back seat- arson/ riot/ looting/ damage to public property / attack on police follows...when culprits are arrested- a team of oppostion leaders/ intellectuals parade in the city/ hospitals/ media demanding for CBI enquiry, release of all arrested and resignation of all concerned !

Alas! the poor common man does not understand the designs of these "out of power" politicians!

All these out of power politicians want is to get rid of BJP rule in Karnataka, before  Lok Sabha elections...Innocent youngsters are persuaded to indulge in riots, when they are arrested for their acts of attacking the Police force, these predictable out of power politicians take resort with Human rights organizations with letterhead presence, Congress office bearers parading as human rights council members...not to forget the use of Women and children as human shields, a tactic well adopted so far by separatist organizations/ terror groups!
