Luck runs out for conning duo
BANGALORE: They identified themselves as the home minister's son-in-law and gunman and asked for favours. They even trapped an assistant commissioner of police. But they were caught when somebody alerted the police commissioner. CCB sleuths have arrested conmen Sujendra (27) and Govindaraju (40). The former, from Udupi district, which is also the home town of home minister V S Acharya, stays in RPC Layout, Vijayanagar. He runs a hotel and mobile shop in Gandhinagar. Govindaraju, from Krishnanandanagar police quarters, is a constable from CAR North and is with the VVIP security wing. Sujendra's friend wanted a seat at Seshadripuram College for I year commerce and sought Sujendra's help. The latter and Govindaraju approached the ACP plan, introducing themselves as the home minister's son-in-law and gunman. The duo told the ACP they wanted a college seat for the gunman's son, saying the home minister was himself looking after the son's education! The officer tried to get a seat but since the boy had poor marks, he couldn't get admission. Meanwhile, the police commissioner received a letter about the duo and alerted CCB sleuths. (TOI)

" Through its conduct , choice of stories, and style of breaking news for the past two years, TV9 has taken television journalism to disgraceful new lows and on Sunday it hit a new depth by its own standard. This latest disgrace of TV9—without ascertaining the veracity—deserves to condemned as nothing short of criminal."
"What do you do when a false and mischievous story administers a deadly blow to a well-intentioned medical initiative that reaches out to large, mostly poor and illiterate, sections of society?"
"should the reporter, who was responsible for filing the story without checking for facts, and the editor, who cleared it without bothering to verify the claim, be hauled up and criminal charges framed against them?"

Rumours on pulse polio spark violence

A wave of mischievous rumours about babies dying after being administered pulse polio drops caused panic in Tamil Nadu including Chennai. It all started with a private television, owing allegiance to an opposition party, running a scroll claiming that a child in Erode district had died after taking the polio drops.
Hospitals in Bangalore, which saw crowds of people last night following rumours that pulse polio drops were making children sick, are back to normal now. Authorities are making it clear that it was just rumours that had caused the panic and that there was nothing wrong with the vaccine. But it was an anxious time for both parents - and the hospitals - which had to try and calm the people down. Satish Chandra, Medical Superintendent, Bowring Hospital, says: "From the information we have from the police, the rumours started from Tamil Nadu. There was a death in Tamil Nadu. This was a post operative death -- it was not due to Pulse Polio. That kept spreading and came into Karnataka. Basically it was rumours that spread like wildfire and caught on to the hospitals." And the hospitals had a difficult night of trying to calm down frightened parents. Bowring Hospital property was even damaged. A day after the scare, things are quiet again, but it is clear that not all parents are convinced. Lakshmi, a mother, says: "We put the polio drops last night and the child was not well. In the morning we got to know that the stock was not proper so we brought the child in for a check up."The main concern now is to see that the Pulse Polio programme does not get derailed by this panic.Dr Chandra says: "We need to continue with this programme. We are nearing eradication. We need to continue with this programme, continue with this programme and go ahead. There is no looking back."

Better Deal for Karnataka Cops!

BANGALORE: An internal security cell will be set up to review the security situation in Karnataka, and the new body will take under its ambit theanti-terrorist cell and anti-naxal force, according to home minister V S Acharya.

“A meeting will be held on Friday in which senior police officials will plan the next course of action for tightening security,” Acharya told reporters on Tuesday. He was attending the commemoration day celebration at the City Armed Reserve (CAR) headquarters on Mysore Road.

Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, who also watched the memorial parade, announced many schemes for police personnel.

Their weekly allowance of Rs 50 will be hiked to Rs 100. CAR personnel who were not entitled to the allowance will also get the same. Head constables and others with 20 years of experience and above will be promoted soon.

“We’ll pay educational expenses of children of personnel who died while on duty,” Yeddyurappa said. He also announced several projects worth crores of rupees for the police department — Rs 43 crore for modernisation, Rs 45 crore for development of housing corporations and Rs 10 crore for the police welfare fund. “All the vacant police posts will be filled soon,” he added.

He gave compensation to families of 11 policemen who died while on duty between September 1, 2007, and July 31, 2008.

==================================

Mangalore: an analysis by Chief Minister, Karnatka

Foreign Funds for illegal activities: to be probed

Times of India, PTI, Sept. 16, 2008

BANGALORE: Facing criticism for the recent spate of attacks on churches in Karnataka, the BJP government on Tuesday ordered a probe into the flow of foreign funds to some organisations saying that the money was being used for converting Hindus into Christianity.

“It has come to the knowledge of the state government that some organisations are using foreign funds, they are getting, for conversion of majority Hindus into Christianity,” Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa charged and declared that such things would not be allowed.

“In the backdrop of reports about forcible conversions in parts of the state, which led to attacks on churches, the government has ordered a scrutiny of such accounts which receive foreign funds for conversion,” he told reporters after chairing a high-level meeting to review the law and order situation in the troubled areas.

Attributing conversions as the main reason for Sunday’s attack on churches and prayer halls in parts of two coastal districts and Malnad region’s Chikmagalur, he said he had ordered an enquiry into the foreign funds that were being deployed for conversions.

Yeddyurappa charged the opposition Congress and JD(S) with attempting to destabilise his government and also rejected their demand for a judicial probe into the attack on churches.

He also rejected the opposition demand for his resignation and that of Home Minister Dr V S Acharya and shot back asking, “will the UPA government quit office because of terror strikes?”

Yeddyurappa said that the attacks had taken place in areas where there was conversion activity taking place and said stern action would be taken against those responsible.

Despite the mounting tension, Mangalore, the scene of violent protests remained calm on Tuesday and observed a bandh called by the Sri Ram Sena. Shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed, police said.

They said about 170 persons have been arrested in connection with the attacks on churches in Mangalore, Udupi and Chikmagalur.

As a precautionary measure, the authorities extended the prohibitory orders clamped in Mangalore till September 19. On Sunday, the ban order was imposed for three days.
