H1 N1 : Unanswered Questions

In a letter to the British Medical Journal, Prof B M Hegde, has raised some valid questions on the irrational use of medicines of doubtful value...excerpts...
*Why was the WHO in such a great hurry to raise this to pandemic level?
*Multiple drug resistant tuberculosis has been spreading to allcountries like wild fire; could kill millions if left uncheckedreminding us of the great white death epidemic. Why is that not a pandemic?
*Where is the controlled study to show the effect of Tamiflu against the new Swine Flu virus, in our evidence based medical system?
*Has the new vaccine been tested against the virus in a large study? How are we certain that it will be effective? Is this vaccine safe togive to all age groups, especially when we are ignorant of its truevalidity? Primum Non Nocere.
*What happened to the millions of dollars worth of Tamiflu stockpiledfor the imaginary pandemic of bird flu? The manufacturers must havehad the last laugh last time.
*Will the linear projection of large deaths due to the imaginary dread of the new virus materialise? Do the non-linear universe and the humanbody follow the linear laws?
*If this whole fear mongering fails to materialise who do we hold accountable at the end of the day?
*Do we not know that fear, especially of millions in the world, might weaken their immune system?
*Does the host resistance play any role in the final outcome of the fight between the virus and man? If so, why are we not doing something to build good resistance against the virus?
*Why do we not accept similar untested, but inexpensive, remedies available in many other systems like the Chinese, Indian Ayurvedic and homeopathic systems? Russian scientists have demonstrated viral (andother germs) destruction using particular frequency of subtle energy non- invasively! Our positive sciences understand only 5% of the total energy in this universe while the large 95% needs to be explored for common good. Why are all those efforts classified as pseudo science? What is the definition of science, anyway? To me the present scenario looks like science is what accepted scientists think it is! Wetenschapis wat wetenschappers doen! All these, and many more questions, beg more questions but answers!
Let not our untested expensive interventions be worse than the patient's disease. Educational system was changed by the Romans from educere of Socrates to educare of today, where the authority prescribes what the students should learn from outside! That is the bane of medical, nay, all sciences. Let us go back to educere fromeducare.
Yours ever,
bmhegde

Good Gesture by Congress...ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್ಸ್ ಕಾರ್ಯಕರ್ತರಿಂದ ಆಚಾರ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮಾನ...ಶ್ಲಾಘನೀಯ...

Dr V S Acharya was facilitated by Congress party workers led by Shri U T Khader at Thokkottu yesterday. A cordial gesture amongst political rivals...it may be recalled that even Dr Acharya had shown such gesture when he addressed a group of Congress workers at Hiriadka...As usual the media has a different take on the whole episode!

Daijiworld reports: Comedy of Errors— When Congress Activists Garland BJP Minister ! Mangalore, Aug 10: In what can be termed a hilarious case of mistaken identity, Congress party workers ended up felicitating state home minister Dr V S Acharya instead of their leader and union minister for law M Veerappa Moily, on Monday August 10.
The incident took place at Thokkottu Circle near Ullal where Congress activists were waiting with garlands and firecrackers to extend a rousing welcome to Moily who was on his maiden visit to the district after being inducted into the union cabinet.
No sooner did they see the convoy of vehicles, complete with a police escort, revolving red beacon, and blaring siren, than they began bursting the firecrackers. Seeing this, the police escort and the convoy stopped there. One of the waiting Congress leaders approached the convoy and to his shock found Dr Acharya instead of Moily! Without the slightest hint of embarrassment at such a major gaffe, the Congress leader, MLA U T Khader went ahead and felicitated him by draping a shawl and the two shook hands cordially while someone else garlanded the minister.Dr Acharya was also en route the same programme that Moily was to attend. A few minutes after the incident, Moily reached the spot and was accorded a warm welcome. A Congress worker later said that the felicitation to Dr Acharya was definitely a mistake. He added that in the first instance there were no smiles on their faces, but the second one saw more than its share of smiles!

BIT Mangalore Inaugural

Home Minister Dr V S Acharya delivering the presidential address said that the state is a potential destination for professional courses. However, he said, "we still remain far behind with regard to economic infrastructure compared to developed countries." State government had reserved R 9,000 crore for education sector for the current academic year, he added.
Dr Acharya said that though there are 160 engineering colleges which offer degree in Civil Engineering stream in India, none of the institutes could produce another Sir Visveswaraiah so far. Civil engineering should be given more emphasis, since the development of the nation depends mainly on development of buildings, roads, bridges, dams and other infrastructure, he added.
