Athletic Meet, Udupi

Udupi, Oct 14: District in-charge minister, Dr V S Acharya, promised to put in efforts towards realizing the long-felt need of laying a modern synthetic track in the town to boost training facilities for the sportspersons.

He also exuded confidence of turning the region into a prominent centre of sports within a period of five years, if everyone put in their efforts in this direction.

The minister was speaking after inaugurating the state level athletics championship, which underwent at the district stadium here on Thursday October 13. The championship is being held by the district athletics association in association with Karnataka Athletics Association. Corporation Bank has sponsored the event, while Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd have participated as co-sponsor.

“During his recent visit to the town, our Chief Minister has given his nod for laying the synthetic track here at a cost of four crore rupees. My endeavour will be to ensure that the work on the track will begin during this financial year itself. If teachers, sportspersons, organizations and clubs come together, it is not difficult to turn this region into a sports hub,” he felt.

Corporation Bank general manager, B R Bhat, presided over the inaugural. District deputy commissioner, Dr M T Reju, inspected guard of honour provided by the sportspersons. President of the championship committee and MLA, K Raghupati Bhat, welcomed. Working president, Yashpal Suvarna, proposed vote of thanks.

MRPL managing director, Uttam Kumar Basu, well-known sportsperson and cine actress, Ashwini Nachappa, Dr Mohan Alva, municipal president, Kiran Kumar, taluk panchayat president, Devadas Hebbar, assistant director in the department of sports, Seetanadi Vittal Shetty, secretary of Karnataka Athletics Association, Satyanarayana, and various other dignitaries were present.
